The reason some airbnb can charge less than legitimate bed and breakfasts is that they are generally anonymous which means that they may not be reporting the rental as income to the state or feds. If they are, they at least have the minimum in safety features like smoke and Carbon monoxide detectors. If you do decide to use airbnb I suggest you call the town hall of the town they are in to see if they are a legal rental with town. And most hosts of airbnb are not professional hosts so you may not get the amenities you expect.
In many cases, airbnb owners are not licensed, inspected or insured for guest liability.
